Explore the Area

Sandwich is close to the Cathedral City of Canterbury, the channel tunnel and only a few miles form the cross-channel ports of Folkestone and Dover. There are many leisure activities and attractions nearby, including golf with the Open Championship Links Courses, Sailing, Bird Watching, Bowls, Wind-surfing, Fresh-water and Sea angling.

However the main attraction is Sandwich itself, with a history pre dating Roman times, Richborough Roman Fort is close by, and the narrow winding streets with overhanging buildings make Sandwich one of the best preserved medieval towns in England.

History of the Inn

The first recorded mention of the Fleur de Lis was in 1642, when the town crier proclaimed it as a meeting place for volunteers to fight for Charles I.

In the 18th century it became the coaching office for Sandwich and coaches could be booked for Canterbury, Ramsgate and Dover.
